NYX Cosmetics Lip Primer Review

Firstly, sorry for my tardiness. I usually post these early in the morning. ๐Ÿ™‚

I got this lip primer last year when I was beginning to wear more makeup again. I have never gotten a lip primer before, so this was my first experience using one.

Note: There is a slightly darker shade: ‘Deep Nude’.

Size: .1oz
Price: $7.00

For the size and price, I have to say it’s pretty reasonable. You don’t use very much of it anyway, so it really does last a while. I wish I could have remembered to take a picture of what I have left (it’s still a lot).

Product Description from NYX:

Swatches:

Even though I labeled the image above, I really want to go over it with you and explain. Left column are swatches WITHOUT lip primer, right column are swatches WITH lip primer.

Top three swatches are creamy formulas.

For creamy formulas I used:

  1. NYX Extra Creamy Round Lipstick in Power
  2. Wet n Wild Megalast Lip Color in Mauve Outta Here
  3. Wet n Wild Silk Finish Lipstick in 15 Minutes Aflame

One obvious thing about the creamy formulas was how the lip primer acted as a mattifying base. All three formulas lost the bit of shine they had. This is not a bad thing at all. This is simply to illustrate the difference it makes when you wear this lip primer with creamy formulas versus when you don’t.

Another thing I noticed, the lip primer also toned down two shades slightly (NYX & WnW in Mauve Outta Here), not super noticeable unless you look closely. However, the WnW Silk Finish Lipstick seems much more vibrant and pigmented. I’m attributing this to the fact that its formula is silky, so it will never completely mattify (unless of course you use a product specifically for mattfying lipsticks, but I wouldn’t know because I don’t own a product like that, simply my opinion).

In terms of staying power, the lip primer didn’t help much. Creamy formulas don’t tend to last as long, in my experience, and I didn’t notice a huge difference with or without the use of lip primer.

Bottom three swatches are matte formulas.

For matte formulas I used:

  1. theBalm Meet Matt(e) Hughes in Committed
  2. NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Milan
  3. Jordana Modern Matte Lipstick in Matte Caliente

I have to say I absolutely love this lip primer for matte formulas and liquid lipsticks. At first glance it is SO OBVIOUS how this lip primer has enhanced these matte formulas. They are already very pigmented (all matte formulas are), who knew a simple use of lip primer could enhance the pigment that much more? Maybe I’m exaggerating, but I really love the results WITH the lip primer.

In terms of staying power… WOW! It really does help with application, and they last a long time alone, with the lip primer they tend to last a little longer. I was honestly surprised at how well this lip primer made my matte lipsticks last. (Two thumbs up!)

Now onto pros and cons…

Pros:

  • Retractable
  • Creates a good canvas
  • Enhances color slightly (matte/liquid)
  • Easy to apply
  • Lightweight
  • Best for matte formulas (including liquid lipsticks)
  • *Makes creamy formulas look matte (this could be a con based on preference)
  • Reasonably priced
  • Long lasting with matte formulas

Cons:

  • Not very long lasting with creamy formulas
  • Will accentuate and settle into lip lines (if you do not exfoliate)
  • Only two ‘shades’ to choose from

Conclusion:

Even though it doesn’t make a difference in staying power with creamy formulas, I still like how it acts as a mattfying base for them. Another thing I like about this product is the color enhancement on matte formulas, and how it really does help to make them last and not fade. I will definitely be purchasing this item again when I run out!

Have you given this product a try? How did you like it?
