New Year’s Resolutions 2018 and How I Plan to Achieve Them

Happy Friday!

I’m so so sorry that I’ve been gone since the year started. It was totally unexpected but I’m glad I took that break for myself. After all, you guys saw so much from me in the month of December, I felt I deserved it. πŸ™‚

It is only fitting that my first blog post after my little break would be this one. It’s the start of a new year, and I’m starting to get a routine down for both my son and I, but more on that another time.

As you’ve read in this post’s title, the content of it is already obvious. However, I recently read Mia’s post on setting and sticking to New Year’s resolutions, and it dawned on me: I never think about HOW I will go about achieving said goals. I always make a list and pray to the higher power that I can follow through with them after a weeks. More often than not, I end up FAILING miserably because I never came up with a plan to achieve my goals.

So, today I will be sharing with you my resolutions and how I plan on achieving each one, though some will be pretty straight forward and others will require more time, patience, and effort.

Using some of Mia’s tips, I will outline my plan for each goal, and put an effort from my part to achieve it. I have listed my goals/resolutions in order of importance (#1 being the utmost priority) but just because the ones at the bottom of the list are consider “less important” it doesn’t mean they don’t matter to me.

Goal #1:Β Create a Routine for Ciel and I

WHY? Being a stay-at-home mom is tough and I realized that Ciel and I don’t have a routine to keep us busy throughout the day and he could probably benefit from one more than I can possibly imagine at the moment.

HOW? I’m way ahead of this. I actually planned for this last month, making sure to include breakfast, playtime, storytime, snack time, TV time, educational activities suchΒ  as puzzles and games, arts and crafts, dinner, and a bedtime routine. It’s winter here at the moment, so I will have to re-arrange the schedule a bit when spring and summer comes to have outdoor playing time.

  1. Brainstorm schedule and time slots: DONE!
  2. Begin following the schedule little by little: IN PROGRESS..
  3. Progressively include new activities: IN PROGRESS..

I’m aware that this will take at least a few weeks to have completely down. I don’t expect Ciel to follow the routine overnight because it will take some time for him to get settled into his sleeping schedule (which has been a struggle for as long as I can remember).

I do believe I can get him to follow a routine as closely as the one I have planned, and it will benefit him in the long run because he will get to play and learn from new activities.

Goal #2: Exercise Every Day (Mon-Fri)

WHY? It has always been a goal of mine to be healthy and fit, and I believe that exercising is one way I can get there. I’ve always told myself I wouldn’t let myself “go”, especially now after having had a child. Even though I feel healthy, I’m not entirely “fit” (which became evident after trying on my wardrobe).

HOW? I will allow myself some time to exercise everyday (Monday thru Friday).

  1. Plan on time for exercise: DONE! (Our routine from Goal #1)
  2. WAKE UP on time
  3. Start light

The first week is the hardest and I had a hard time waking up early, only because my sleeping schedule is out of whack and I also suffer from insomnia during the winter. But getting woken up by Ciel at times, and working out when he’s awake is far more difficult than if I was by myself. Which has made me want to wake up that much earlier so I can get in some time to work out by MYSELF with the incentive of getting free time afterward.

I started light with yoga, but as the second week rolled around, I decided to step up my workout and started using weights as well. I must say it’s going well so far πŸ™‚

Goal #3: Work on Cardio

WHY? I want to be more fit and this means cardio as well. As a child I had asthma and chronic bronchitis, and I feel as though that contributes to my crappy lung capacity. It took me an entire year in high school to be able to jog/run on the treadmill without feeling like I was running out of breath.

HOW? Goal #2 is to exercise more, and I have found a few YT videos for cardio that can be done at home. Once the weather is more pleasant I will walk/jog outside or go hiking.

  1. Do at home workouts
  2. Slowly progress to walks and/or go hiking (weather permitting)

* * *

Goal #4: More Water, More Veggies, Less Meat

WHY? I always fail at drinking water as often as I should. I drink plenty of water for a few days, get super busy and forget to drink water at others, and I really would like to stay consistent. Drinking more water will help me become more fit as well and will make my skin look so much better (for when I want to wear makeup). My journey to be fit and healthy includes eating well too.

HOW? I have convinced Alex to eat more veggies and less red meat with me so that we can take on this healthy journey together and keep each other accountable.

  1. Browse Pinterest for recipes
  2. Create menu board: IN PROGRESS.
  3. Rotate recipes often to each different meals

* * *

Goal #5: Get Finances Back on Track

WHY? The holiday season wipes our bank account every single year as we need to buy presents for Christmas, and we all have birthdays during the fall, so everything literally piles on.

HOW? I have taken a personal finance class in college which helped me out a lot. Now that the holiday season is over, I can begin to budget accordingly.

  1. Outline of bills each month
  2. Estimate monthly income
  3. Cut back on spending
  4. Save a certain amount weekly
  5. Provide weekly allowances as spending money
  6. Create monthly financial sheet

* * *

Goal #6: Dinner Dates (weekly/monthly)

WHY? We’ve been parents for three years but even now, it’s hard to get some time together. Our toddler is currently on the stage where he gets jealous of daddy hugging mommy, and having dinner dates gives us a chance to sit down, eat good food together and converse about us and our future and our hopes and dreams, lol.

HOW? Will be hard, especially considering that we would like to cut back on spending.. But we will ask someone to watch out kiddo once a month so we can go celebrate our monthiversaries πŸ™‚ *fingers crossed*

* * *

Goal #7: More Travel/Vacation

WHY? I want to see the world, or at least visit other places that I haven’t really been to.

HOW? As we settle our finances again, we will be able to save more money each week. That means we will also be doing less spending, and more saving for future vacations. I will be doing a travel list series soon πŸ˜‰

  1. Save money (weekly)
  2. Start small: We are already planning a short trip to our neighboring state, Washington πŸ™‚

* * *

Goal #8: More Sight-Seeing

WHY? There are lots of places inside my state that I have yet to see, either because I haven’t been able to go, or we can’t afford to go at the time. This year, I’m determined to see more of my beloved state and experience new sights. Hopefully you guys like what you see as well πŸ™‚

HOW? Simple. I’m determined to see more and do more. Even if that means we only get to see a place for a day.

  1. Look up places to go
  2. DRIVE!

* * *

Goal #9: More Vlogs/Lifestyle Posts on Blog

WHY? For the simple fact of wanting to create some memories with my boys. I loved the few home videos my parents had of my brother and I when we were kids, and I would love to give the same to my kiddo.

HOW? I will do my best to vlog and take photos anytime we go somewhere for the day that you guys haven’t see yet. And frankly, I could probably practice my photography as well. If you guys would like me to do a “Day in the Life” kind of post, I would love to jump at the idea πŸ™‚

* * *

Goal #10: Read At Least ONE Book Monthly

WHY? I want to do something else with my free time and reading good books take me to different worlds and I get to learn new words to expand my vocabulary in the process.

HOW? Picking up books at the library and asking for suggestions and recommendations.

  1. Make a list of books
  2. Head to the library and find them
  3. READ!

* * *

Goal #11: Stress Less

WHY? Admittedly, I don’t handle stress well which is news to me because I thought I could. It seems over the years this fact has become more evident and at times it has plagued my every day life and my overall health.

Stress has affected me in more ways than one, such as giving me anxiety and near-clinical depression, mood swings/irritability, my skin not clearing up (acne), tense muscles, loss of appetite, and becoming ill more often. I really would like to change that this year.

HOW? Though it’s easier said than done, I thought I could take up yoga, meditate again in the mornings and before bedtime, take deep breaths when in a difficult situation or count to ten, and allow myself to let things go and not ponder on the inevitable.

  1. Meditate mornings and evenings
  2. Record daily progress using an App
  3. LET GO!

I will keep myself accountable by making sure to update you guys on how I’m doing at least once every quarter. If I only do an update every 6 months, I’m afraid I won’t keep myself in check and will therefore fail that much more. πŸ™‚

Do you guys have any New Year’s Resolutions?

      I hope planning it all out like this helps. I’m already working out daily and doing a few other things and it’s all going well lol. Let’s hope I can keep it up lol.
      But thanks so much! I’ll need all the luck I can get 😊
      Have you set any goals for.yourself?

        I think it also helps that you’re not just forcing yourself to do all of it right away, which would end up being overwhelming. Starting slow to ease into it is always best for forming a habit! I do have a few goals…working out a few times a week (I row, so off-days are needed for muscle healing), taking college classes, blogging consistently, saving up money for a trip to AK, and some other small things. The New Year is always an exciting time to look at our lives and see how we want to improve them!

    Great goals! I always seem to hate New Years resolutions because so many of them aren’t achievable. They’re more wishes than true goals. But it sounds like you’re already well on your way to making these goals a reality!

      Thank you! I wasn’t going to do any goals this year either but then I thought, if I make a plan and follow through, they can certainly become attainable goals. 😊 sure enough, planning helps A LOT!

    All your goals for 2018 sound really beneficial to yourself and the health of your body / mind and your happiness in general. As they say ‘travel is the only thing we can buy in life that makes us richer’ and even if its just visiting somewhere new in your state, it all counts. More often than not we don’t appreciate the beauty of where we live because we’re so close to the landmarks we live by, we take it for granted we can go whenever. My Dad knows of people who live in Arizona and have never even been to the Grand Canyon, imagine that! Its amazing that you’re already succeeding with your workout goals, I must admit I know I could achieve so much more if I just managed to wake up earlier, even just 10 minutes earlier so I could fit in a quick workout. I often follow Lucy Wyndham-Reads workouts on youtube- they are amazing. I’ll send her twitter through a DM if you like! Good luck with all your goals lovely, I hope your 2018 is amazing!

      I purposefully made sure that my new year;s resolutions came to “the same conclusion”, that being healthier lifestyle. And yes, traveling makes us richer, I fully believe in that. You get to see the world around you, and you begin to acknowledge nature and not take it for granted. I also feel more grounded when I’m outside.
      OMG really?! I’d love to see the Grand Canyon. I’ve heard stories of people who say they weren’t expecting it to be as fulfilling, but seeing it with their own eyes, made it that much grander!
      Honestly, this is the longest I’ve ever stuck to working out, I mean, I’ve done small workouts, but actually working out for about an hour, I haven’t done that since I was in high school! LOL. So it feels really good, and I also feel super energized! πŸ˜€
      And yes, please send me her twitter, once I finish the 30 Days of Yoga this month, I will need other workout videos to do something different πŸ™‚
      Thank you lovely, I hope you can achieve your goals as well! ❀

      That’s good! I’m doing it mainly because I’ve NEVER had a routine for Ciel, lol. Hispanics just tend to go about their day like whatever, but I feel like I want to change that so he’s stimulated on different levels πŸ™‚
      I wish you good luck! Usually girls are much easier to get into routine than boys LOL

    I have a bunch of them, but I have decided not to write them down this year, especially not on the blog. I think I might be afraid of failure. I think of your goals are great and achievable. I would definitely like to read more lifestyle posts from you, I’m obsessed with moms and their routines. I admit I do enjoy such posts more than beauty ones (beauty boxes, products, etc) but I do love your make looks too. May I ask how to pronounce your little boy’s name? ❀️

      That’s okay πŸ™‚ sometimes it’s better to keep them in mind and think through how you want to achieve those goals before you make any commitment πŸ™‚ I think it’s natural to feel like we will fail, especially when it comes to new year’s resolutions because those goals tend to be forgotten within a few weeks anyway lol.
      and I’d love nothing more than to include lifestyle posts, but we really don’t do ANYTHING exciting, at least nothing that seems like it’s worth blogging about lol but I’m looking into other ideas πŸ™‚
      And his name is pronounced like “Cielo” in Spanish but without the “o”. In English, the ‘L’ would be pronounced more.
