My First Bullet Journal + Set Up

I’m finally doing it!!

I’ve been planning on doing this ALL YEAR long.

Since the second half of the year tends to be pretty busy for me, I wasn’t getting a chance to come up with my spreads so I have been sketching them in the span of six months!!

Now that I have an idea of what I will be including in my BuJo, it’s just a matter of figuring out how creative I want to get with each spread. I’m actually looking forward to this because it will allow me to organize my life, including blogging, into one sole book.

I’ve dabbled with planners but they weren’t my thing because they’re so simple to me. I like the idea of visual representation for certain aspects and I’ve added specific spreads that I will be using daily.

Let’s get started!

Watch me ink my first bullet journal:

Opening /Cover Page: 2019

I tried to keep it simple since I won’t be seeing this page as much. I went with starry/twinkle lights banners I found on Pinterest. I do have a board full of BuJo ideas and inspo for anyone interested.

Very standard page, like a table of contents. Will be referring back to this page often.

Key & Year at a Glance

Basic key page; top half of the page is for all my planning and lists, and the bottom half is for scheduling my posts, which is why I have different colored pens (for different topics/posts).

Year at a Glance is also a basic calendar. It was such a pain in the ass to fill this out!

Future Log

I found this idea on Pinterest and thought it would be great to have one because I tend to plan things in advance too often.. I’m hoping the boxes are not too small, but I can always make a second spread if I need it. I added drop shadows to the boxes to make them pop.

Goals & Memories

My goals are NOT my resolutions, I didn’t make any resolutions this year. These are goals/things I’ve started last year that I would like to improve on. It’s a nice mix of mind, body and soul. The vines/plants theme adds a nice touch to this page—”personal growth”.

My Memories page is also a basic box layout for each month. If I feel like I need more space, I will be adding a spread to each of my monthly spreads as needed.

Birthdays (+Anniversaries)

My least favorite spread. The concept was good but just poorly executed from my part. I could not draw those damn balloons so I resorted to circles and inking them was so hard so they look a bit crappy and not at all like balloons lol.

Reasons To Be Happy / Grateful For Log

The sunflower theme goes so well with my Reasons to be Happy page. I didn’t realize it until I was filming. I feel as though sunflowers represent happiness, or at least that’s how they seem like to me. So the fact that the theme and the topic came together was fantastic! Synchronicity! I already did 50 Things That Make Me Smile, so I might just take some ideas from there to add on here.

My Grateful For log/page is blank because I will be adding onto it as the year progresses.

A Year in Color / Self-Care Menu

A Year in Color will represent how my days are going and each “mood” is represented by a color. I added this in hopes of seeing a visual representation of my moods/how much I get stressed vs. how often I enjoy my day and not let life get the best of me.

My Self Care Menu was purposefully put next to AYIC for those bad days when I really need a pick-me-up. I had a realization last year, as did my husband, that I don’t often take breaks for myself, so when all that stress builds up I just explode and get so angry, irritated, frustrated and anxious and I will have mental breakdowns if I don’t slow down. So this page is a reminder to take care of myself.

21 Daily Affirmations / Morning Routine

My 21 Daily Affirmations might be cheesy to some, but I often feel like life is out of my control and I’m such a perfectionist to the point where I get upset when things don’t go my way. So yeah, I’m stubborn, too! LOL. But reading this page every morning will help ground me and remind me that I choose how to react, and my reaction can* determine how the rest of my day will go. So hopefully starting the day positively will reduce my need for things to be perfect.

My Morning Routine is what my ideal morning would look like. I hope that once my sleep schedule is back to normal, I can start doing this, and again, start the day by taking care of myself first.

Fitness & Sleep Trackers

My Fitness Tracker is to see my progress. I don’t plan on working out every single day for long periods of time, but I do hope that I can get a 10min workout daily, if possible. If not, I will still be doing my daily squats, sit-ups and push-ups to tone my body even when I’m not as active.

My Sleep Tracker is important to me because I will be able to see my sleep patterns visually. I’m sure I’ve mentioned many times that I tend to sleep a lot less during the winter, so by figuring out my sleep pattern, I’ll be able to make better choices for myself, as well as my health, and figure out a schedule that works for me while also getting a good night’s sleep.

Project Tracker / Books I’ve Read

These pages are very simple. My Project Tracker will be used for big projects because without a list, I lose track and forget about what needs to be done.

The Books I’ve Read is your basic bookshelf page. You add a book when you’ve finished it. I haven’t read since the beginning of December I believe, but would like to start that up again and hope I can read more books this year.

Savings Goals / Master List: Chores

My Savings Goals includes things I need to save up for, emergency fund, travel fund, a new/better car, a new camera, and another savings for buying gifts. Courtney also gave me the idea to make a budget for holiday shopping, so I’ll be sure to add that to my BuJo in a different spread.

Lastly, My Master Chore List. Perfect for figuring out what needs to be done each night, week, month, etc. And it will help me prioritize chores for better time management.

That’s it! I know that’s a whole lot of pages for a set-up but I did feel like these are all pages I need that will be useful to me either daily, or long term. A lot of these are for personal growth and my monthly spreads will be have more details.

I’d love to know if you guys would like to see more BuJo posts?!
And let me know who else has one or has done one and how it worked for you?

    1. Thanks so much! I always thought it would be too much work for me but I actually really liked sketching my pages and then inking it and adding color. It really brought it to life and now I’m excited to use it every day. 😁 the thing I love about it is that you can be as minimalist or as artsy as you’d like and you can add whatever you want to it too. 😁 you should look into using one, you may like it!

  1. I started my bullet journal last year and I really love how everything is in one place! I’ve done a year in pixels/mood tracker page too! I like the idea of your monthly memories and your chore list 🙂

    1. Oh yay!! Awesome! I’ve been using it daily and I love it! I feel a bit more organized than before I’m able to plan ahead without having too many lists elsewhere lol!
I really liked the idea of the mood tracker in a yearly form lol. I just had to use that idea when I saw it on pinterest. Its genius and I think it will also help me reflect on how I let other factors affect my mood 😊
And my memories page came from when we do things as a family together and I never get to document them, so I may end up writing them in each month if there’s any and hopefully snap some photos along the way! 😁

  2. This is so great! I’ve always wanted to try bullet journaling, but I’m so intimidated by the idea of having to come up with all the content to put in there. That, and I’m not the best artist. Haha! You have beautiful handwriting by the way!

    1. Thank you! I was honestly very intimated as well because there are so many artistic BuJos on pinterest and Instagram that made me feel like I couldn’t achieve them, but I’m glad I’m trying it and I can be as minimalist as I’d like or try to make it more artsy with cute doodles. I actually saved a ton of doodles on my pinterest with a few “how to’s” and Amanda Rachel Lee on YouTube has several doodle videos which are amazing! She also does some quick how to vids on her IG every once in a while. I’m thinking I’ll do some of her themes for the upcoming months because they’re just that good and relatively easy to recreate.
If you feel overwhelmed by all the content just make a list of what you’d like to put in there first or look up bujo pages ideas or Inspo on pinterest. That’s essentially how I got started.
Thanks so much! I always think my handwriting is so crappy haha. Have a lovely week!

      1. You’re welcome! Thank you for all the info! I’m definitely going to look her up. I started saving some ideas a while ago, but stuck with a traditional planner. Your handwriting is lovely! Mine is crap and I can’t write straight to save my life. Lmao!

  3. YASSS bullet journaling Is THE shit!I tried it this month for the first time too, and it’s SO convenient.Except, mine isn’t as artistic as yours haha I definitely need to get some inspiration from your bujo set-up and add some art to my plain one!Love this!

    1. I’m already obsessed with it! I’m actually using it every day. I like it more than a planner. Those never caught my attention lol.
If you’re looking for inspo, there’s a ton of spreads on pinterest. I also follow a girl on YouTube, her name is Amanda Rachel Lee, she has some pretty amazing themes and spreads, I’m gonna have to recreate some of hers. She also has tips and some doodle vids! 😉

  4. I absolutely love this! It’s minimalist but also artsy. I relate so hard to being a perfectionist and wanting things my way, it’s so annoying and another reason why I haven’t made a bullet journal even though I really want to.

    1. Thanks so much! I like the minimalist look but I did want it to be a bit more colorful with more doodles if possible lol.
Getting everything perfect was what was holding me back from starting this BuJo. I’m glad I started it though. I’ve kept in mind that it’s my first one so it won’t look perfect but practice makes it perfect. So in my head, the more I do it, the better I’ll get. You should definitely give it a shot. I sketch with pencil first so I can erase it if I don’t like it lol.

      1. You’re welcome! ✨
And omg yes! I always go on pinterest and see a bunch of super cute spreads and themes. I really do want to try it and I have been contemplating on it, I just want to make sure I’ll make use of it since I have a bad habit of starting planners and forgetting to write on them

        1. That was my main concern, “will I actually use it?” So when I went on Pinterest for BuJo for beginners, I found infographics of pages to have and it could include anything from your daily life, things you want to do, things you want to accomplish, trackers for mood, fitness, water intake, habits, etc. Once I did some research it all sort of came together on its own and it finally clicked on what I just HAD to have in it in order to succeed. You have time to think about it before you make a commitment, I think some people also use regular journals to “map out” what their BuJo would look like., so that might be helpful too. 🙂

    1. I finally made it happen because I kept putting it off and I felt like I was getting in my own way telling myself it wouldn’t look as good as others. But the function is what matters, not so much the aesthetic but it’s been fun experimenting with some color and a few doodles.

  5. Wowwww this is absolutely fantastic, Rossy!! I’d briefly heard of bullet journaling before, but I had no idea that you draw everything out visually. I’d never be artistic enough for this, but you did such a great job! It looks fantastic and I’d totally buy something like this in the store. Oh and the balloons DEFINITELY look like balloons to me, so don’t be too hard on yourself. 😉 It’s all super impressive to me. I love the self-care and daily affirmation pages the best. What great ideas and you executed them amazingly. Looks like you are setting yourself up for a great year, girl!! ❤

    1. Thanks so much! You’re always the sweetest ever and so supportive of everything I do! ❤ xx thank you so much, Courtney! ❤
I'm honestly not artistic either, some ideas I pulled from Pinterest because they seemed easy to do (and they were).
Thank you! It's still my least favorite spread because I guess I could have made it look better or something? Perhaps I'll add a bit more color to the balloons as if they were all different colors or something LOL
Yeah the self care menu is one of my faves! I've been reading my daily affirmations and I already feel a slight shift in my own thought process if that makes any sense? The words are escaping me at the moment so I don't have a more eloquent way to describe it XD
Thanks so much! I already love it, it's keeping me well organized 🙂

      1. Of course!! I think it really is incredible, and such a neat way to organize your life/schedule/routine. You did a fantastic job with it, girl!! I mean, even with pulling them from Pinterest, you were still able to beautifully draw them–which is far more than I’d be able to do, lol. My artistic side extends to stick figures haha.
Different color balloons may make them pop a bit more if that’s what you’re looking for! I do think they still look great as they are, but different colors may help you achieve what you originally envisioned.
No worries girl, I totally get what you mean! The positive affirmations would do a lot to help give you a good perspective and remind you of various helpful things when stress comes your way. They can help center you and remind you it’s okay. 🙂 I’ve been doing morning yoga and I think it’s been helping give such a great start to my day!

        1. Lol believe it or not it took me several tries to draw a few things in pencil. I had to do sketches on another journal first just in case lol.
I’ll give it a shot, either way no one is going to see that page anymore but me lol.
Oh gosh I miss morning yoga. I still sleep late and wake up later than I’d like so I haven’t started morning workouts yet 😑

  6. I love your bullet journal spread! It must have taken you a long time to plan & draw up all of this. I’d love to keep up with a bullet journal but I know myself and I probably wouldn’t stick to it. I have a yearly planner that I’ll be consistent with for a few months, then forget about it and have to pick it up later. Happy Journalling!

    1. Not really? LOL, it just took me a while to sketch out my spreads for the simple fact that I couldn’t find the time to do it. I set a bunch of projects for myself for the second half of the year and was super swamped for three or four months, not to mention the time I had family over set me back a bit too but that’s okay! 🙂
I have tried planners and didn’t like them, it’s all written and there was no space for my endless lists but this is keeping me fairly organized! 🙂

  7. okayyy I cannot get over the fact that you drew all that yourself?!?!? It looks like something you could buy from Target- seriously so beautiful. You could sell ‘um! I love how you were able to individualize it to your goals & personal taste so much- the pops of color are so fun too! I cannot wait to hear how it works through the year. Thanks for sharing, Rossy!

    1. Awh thanks!! Lol selling them would be too much work haha
Yeah I love that you’re able to make bullet journals more personal to you, so that’s what drew me to them in the first place.

  8. Rossy! I love this! You are so creative & talented. I love all the flower/plant pages. It’s gonna be so amazing for you to look back on all of these filled out pages next year.

Yes! Definitely show us more BuJo pages as you go! I love seeing these so much.

    1. I’m looking forward to that!! I’m excited to see my year in color page all filled out I want to see exactly how often I have bad days haha. So far so good. I haven’t had more than one day where I’m like ” I want to everyone to just fuck off”
Awesome!! I’ll be doing “plan with me’s” from now on which will just be the layouts of each month lol
