2019 Summer Hair REVEAL! — Box-Dye At Home

Hello dolls!

I got another BONUS post for you this week! I’ve been planning ahead for the upcoming weeks and it’s looking like I’ll be posting three to five times a week for the rest of the month. There’s just THAT much I want to do LOL.

Anyway, today’s post and video is all about my new hair. If you follow my personal IG, you might have already seen it, but to those of you who haven’t, that’s what this post is all about! 🙂

I’m super excited about showing you guys because this is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time now. I thought about bleaching my hair for the longest time to get a vibrant color, but the more I looked into it, the more it seemed like a bad idea.

Firstly, because I’m a natural brunette, it would take several session if not HOURS to get my hair blonde. Secondly, I don’t think I could pull off blonde AT ALL. Third, I looked at the costs and it’s upwards of $200 for what I wanted..  That being said, bleaching my hair was out of the question. Reason number four; bleaching is basically damage to your hair and I’m trying to move away from that. Fifth and final reason; I read so many articles explaining that colors tend to fade MUCH quicker than “natural” hair colors, they basically fade with every wash.

So.. my only solution was to pick up a box of colored dye from the store and try it out at home to see how I liked it. That way, if I don’t like it and/or if it washes out, no problem. My brown hair will still be underneath.

So let’s take a look at my hair before dyeing it at home so you can see what I started with:

BEFORE:

So as you can see it’s brown but not too dark either.

And now, what you have all been waiting for if you opened this post.

AFTER:

I dyed my hair Friday, June 21st, so I will date the photos for you. Also, I’m sorry the photos don’t do my hair any justice, it was really hard getting a good shot that wasn’t overexposed.

June 22nd

The day after dyeing it, it looks soooo good!! Unfortunately I didn’t get to take any photos that day, I matched with my dress!!

I used Splat 30 Wash No Bleach Kit in Midnight Indigo
(Surprisingly this brand is VEGAN and CRUELTY FREE! YASSSS!!)

June 24th

Left photo was overcast weather and the right photo was nice and sunny (on the SAME DAY, literal minutes apart.. That’s the PNW for you) so you can see how vibrant it is when the light hits it just perfectly.

bluehair2

June 28th

I thought by this time most of the dye had washed out, but I was able to get some photos under some shade on a sunny day, and was surprised to see that it still looks fairly nice and blue! I think my top made it pop a bit more.

June 29th

I asked Alex to take a photo of my hair because it was sunny, but it either looked too dark or too overexposed. It’s tricky photographing in the middle of the day when it’s sunny. But anyway, my hair looks different under every lighting but it’s still pretty cool.

July 3rd

On my video I accidentally forgot to add the previous photo and I also put the wrong date for the following.. Ooopss..

Left photo is overcast weather indoors, so you can see it looks much darker but you can still see a navy hue. Right photo is under artificial (cool) lighting AND flash, but it doesn’t look like much.

bluehair4

These two photos below are overcast weather outdoors. We haven’t had much sun lately so I wasn’t able to take any current photos under the sun sadly. But as you can see from over the weekend (June 28th), a week after dyeing it, it’s still holding up quite nicely.

So that’s my hair now! I love it! I’ve already gotten SO MANY compliments from a bunch of friends and family on both my personal IG and my Facebook. I’m so glad I did this, it looks super dope. I feel like this color gives me an edge, I would definitely love it if it were more vibrant, but I don’t know about the bleaching process and the dye washing out super fast lol.

If any of you dye your hair often and/or you bleach your hair, I’d love to know your experiences from that whether you do it at home yourself, or get it done at a salon.

I hope my American friends have an amazing July 4th today!

Thanks for stopping by! ❤

    1. Thank youuu!!! And if I was able to get a nice blue tint in my hair as a brunette, I am POSITIVE that you can too! It is pretty messy and can stain EVERYTHING but it’s always good to try it first, you’ll never know! 🙂
By the way, if you missed it in the post, I used the Splat 30 Wash No Bleach Kit, but they also have a few other options, like a 10 Wash, and another kit with bleach I believe, so you got plenty of options for the longevity of the color itself, AND the amount of colors the brand has 🙂 good luck if you decide to do it!

  1. oh my gosh your hair looks AMAZING!!!! The blue shade is so fun and it looks like it’s been resistant to fading so far.

Bleaching is definitely more damaging than dyeing, I’ve been struggling with dry frizzy hair ever since I bleached mine. I think a few hair masks are helping but I think if you can avoid bleaching it’s better!

    1. Thank youuu!! I’m so in love with it!! I know I’m shocked that it lasted longer than I thought. We’ll see if it lasts the whole month XD
Awh that’s sad to hear, my hair is SUPER frizzy, so I bet if I would have bleached it, it would have been FAR worse than it is now. I can barely maintain my frizzy hair right now, I can’t imagine it bleached.. It would be a disaster for me 😦 but thanks for telling me your experience with it. I was still leaning towards wanting to bleach it at a salon, but now you’ve sort of convinced me not to LOL

      1. It looks so good! And it’s awesome that it hasn’t faded at all yet, fingers crossed that it stays all month!
Oh yeah, you definitely don’t want even more reason for your hair to be frizzy! I think it depends on how much you bleach it. Because I got highlights a few years ago when I had red hair and I didn’t experience anything out of the ordinary, so it might just be a problem if you bleached everything :S Everyone’s hair is different!

        1. Even if it doesn’t I can try another color, I mean what the hell right? LOL
Yeah I think my hair is just more prone to breakage and damage because it’s so fine and thin. 😦 *sigh* oh well. I’ll stick to this stuff. A friend told me I could use developer to make the colors stick to my hair a bit more and it will also last longer AND it will look a bit brighter.

          1. So we have a beauty supply store here called Sally’s Beauty, and they have some makeup Like LA Colors, basically the cheaper brands, they also have a few nail polishes but they mostly seem to be focused on hair tools and loads of different hair dyes because they just have so many products to choose from. I have to do a bit more research on developer because there are different strengths apparently LOL

  2. That hair color looks so good on you! I love your makeup too. I completely suck with doing makeup so I stick to just eyeliner, haha. Hopefully the color holds a good amount of time! I use to dye the underneath of my hair, and although it wouldn’t stay the original color, it always looked cool once it faded!

    1. Awh thank you so much!! ❤ xx
And remember that more practice makes perfect 🙂 but honestly, sometimes less is more too! 🙂 After about two weeks since dyeing it, I think it still looks fairly good 🙂 still holding up though I see my roots now, then again, I don't think we did it right XD LOL
Nice! I have seen people only dye their hair underneath and it looks so cool when they put it up on a ponytail 🙂

      1. You’re absolutely right! That’s great that it’s holding for so long so far! I mean, sometimes the box dyes are the way to go! It’s pretty fun as well! I’ve got it somewhat blondish brown now, and some on the side dyed, and it is always cool how it looks! Haha. Hope your weekend is well! 🙂

        1. After buying this box dye and seeing great results on MY darker hair, I’m sold! I hope your weekend was amazing and have a great rest of your week! 🙂

  3. Wow, what an amazing color! Looks awesome on you! I’ve never done such a vibrant color before, nor have I bleached my hair in ages. I’ve been dying mine red for about seven years now.

    1. Thank you! 🙂 I’ve never done a vibrant color either, so this is as bright as I’ve ever gone. I’m still tempted to bleach my hair but I don’t think I will since I don’t think I can pull it off you know? LOL
Oh awesome! A friend of mine dyes hers red as well, I don’t think she’s ever changed her color either. Yours suits you so much!

    1. thank you so much!! 🙂 I am definitely loving the blue, it is fading a bit and my roots are also showing now (which I didn’t expect, but then again, I’m pretty sure we didn’t do it completely right) LOL

    1. We didn’t do it right either XD haha but I just couldn’t take my chances of spending so much money on bleaching and possibly not having my hair dyed in that color for more than two weeks, so I took my chances and did it at home 🙂

  4. It looks so so so good!! I love that you went for it! Also, definitely a great idea to just try coloring your hair yourself at home before bleaching or anything. Bleach damages hair so much, it sucks. I love that the color is lasting so long too, what a nice surprise. Did you get semi-permanent or permanent dye?

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Thank youu!! You were of course one of the first people who saw it shortly after dyeing it LOL
This box dye I got is semi-permanent, according to the box it’s a 30 Wash, so it may last a month or two depending on how often I wash my hair, AND depending on how much color gets stripped. I’m trying not to wash my hair too much but I feel like I don’t really have that choice when my hair becomes super oily by the third day. Oh well.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Ohh that was a good way to do it! Those semi-permanent washes are great especially for unnatural colors so you can experiment without crazy commitment lol. I hope it lasts a while for you!! I have to wash my hair daily. I know it’s bad but it gets oily and I have dry scalp (a frustrating combo & how does that even happen?) so it’s worse if I don’t do it daily. Sucks though lol.

        1. YESS! Thank you for understanding! LOL I felt like committing to blonde hair would be a HUGE deal for me, I don’t think I can pull it off. And I would probably have to keep dyeing it therefore DAMAGING my hair more. So I did what I could to avoid that haha.
Girl I’m the same! I’ve lessen the washes from everyday to every other day, and ocassionaly will go three or four days without washing my hair, but omg, it becomes an oily mess! I don’t get it! And I have an itchy dry scalp too unless it’s dandruff LMAO, but either way, I have tried so many things and I can’t seem to get anywhere lol

          1. Yesss once you bleach, it kind of feels like an endless cycle I think, especially if you naturally have dark hair. I’ve thought about getting a balayage to brighten my hair, but it’s sooo expensive. >.<
Oh my gosh, THANK YOU for sharing that you deal with the same type of hair/scalp struggles. It's so annoying! I don't think I have dandruff, because I don't get the flaky stuff. But I still use Head & Shoulders because it's the only shampoo that tends to help my dry scalp! Even with that, though, it still gets itchy if I don't wash daily, ugh.

          2. A balayage would be super pretty on your hair I think! But I do understand that it is expensive.
Mine gets super itchy too and I have noticed that not my entire head has dandruff which is the oddest thing ever 🤣

  5. I’ve never dyed my hair except the tips a few different times. I LOVE your natural hair, I wish mine was that color but girl!! That indigo really does look dope. It turned out so unbelievably well & suits you so much. It looks like you had a professional do it, seriously, it looks GOOD!

    1. Omg everyone always says they love my natural hair color lol to be honest my hair has changed over the years. It used to be a dark brown, and it has lightened on its own somehow? It’s getting lighter lol. I think it may be because I dont leave my house all day.
Thank you! I’m so pleased with how my hair turned out. My hair is still kind of blue a month later. I havent checked if it still has the hue or not but if it doesnt it will probably just look super dark. My roots are showing now though. Lol

      Liked by 1 person

        1. Idk if the fact that it’s getting lighter is a good thing or a bad thing?? Lol
And I’m not sure I think it depends on your hair type or something. My hair still has blue, it hasnt washed off completely and it’s been more than a month. If I had had it done professionally I’m not sure if it would have been different lol. I also havent checked my hair under the sunlight to see how it looks. But my roots are coming in and the difference between my natural hair and the dye is hugeee! My natural hair is so much lighter lol

          Liked by 1 person

          1. I think it’s cool that your hair is getting lighter, naturally, on its own. 😀

Your dyed hair is definitely a lot different than your natural. Will it wash out completely & go back to normal or do you think your hair will always be a bit darker now?

          2. I want to look into why that is, am I getting old? Is my hair not producing enough melanin? Omg perhaps its stress!! 😱😱 I have tried time and time again to lessen my stress and its near impossible lol.
I have no idea? I remember reading that blue and green take forever to wash out completely. So maybe I’ll just have to let my hair grow and then chop it off again lmao. Its still pretty dark now, and it’s still dripping blue when I wash it so I have to wash my hair separately to avoid staining my skin. We’ll see how it looks another month from now lol.

          3. I don’t know, I feel like people’s hair can change for no reason. As long as it’s not greying, right? LOL.

That’s so crazy about the dye staining your skin when you shower & stuff!
