One Year of BoxyLuxe — Is It Worth It?

Hiya dolls!

I almost didn’t post today but I knew I had to put something out while I work on something else for this week and next. And since I just cancelled my Boxycharm & BoxyLuxe subscriptions, I thought I could do yet another “A Year of…” posts.

In the past I have done a post like this on Ipsy, Play by Sephora, and Boxycharm for their regular box. Of course that was before the changes they made.. September officially marked a “full year” of BoxyLuxe for me so I thought I could share what that was like and whether it was worth it.

Before we start, for those of you who don’t know, BoxyLuxe is an upgrade from their regular box, and it’s $49.99 every quarter. However, in order to get BoxyLuxe, you MUST be subscribed to their regular box (will be $25 in November). That means every quarter (March, June, September, December) you will get the BoxyLuxe and all the months in between you will be getting their regular box. Which all in all, it totals up to be a huge amount of money for one full year.

That being said, let’s go through four quarters of BoxyLuxe!

December 2018 / / Tis’ The Season

I was really excited about getting my first BoxyLuxe, so when it arrived and I unboxed it I was ALL about it! I love every single thing but my top three things from this box were the Violet Voss PRO Holy Grail palette, the Elemis Marine Cream, and the Luxie Face Brush Set.

Everything else is great too, of course. The PYT Mini Hair Straightener has come in handy as has the clutch. The Wander Beauty Blush palette was pretty darn good too and blends super well. This box came with 9 products and it was the box with the highest value.

Box Value: $387.00 USD

March 2019 / / La Vie en Rose

My second box was of course in March. The theme was lovely and so pink, and it even came with 10 products! However, this box wasn’t a big hit with me. The Boxycharm traincase was nice and plenty big, especially for traveling, but it sticks to everything so the rose gold exterior comes off, which is a shame. I also gave away the Iconic Eyebrow Cushion and the CoverFX Face Palette.

I haven’t really tried the Morphe palette yet as I’m trying to use a bunch of other palettes I haven’t gotten to yet (one of many reasons I cancelled it in the first place), same with the Wander Beauty Mask and the Lilly Lashes which I can’t wait to wear! The brushes, polish, and the lippie were pretty good quality! This box had the lowest value despite the amount of products included.

Box Value: $301.98 USD

June 2019 / / Getaway

Another box that was a hit in my opinion. The box came with 9 products and I really liked the majority of them. The PYT Hair Dryer came at the perfect time since I needed one. The Dr. Brandt Yogurt Cleanser, Dominique Cosmetics Gloss and the Farmacy Honeymoon Glow are products I use quite often.

I’m still not sure how I feel about the Living Proof Dry Volume and I haven’t had the chance to use the Touch in Sol Essence Primer due to having other products I want to use up. But overall, I’d say I’m quite happy with this box. It is also the second highest in value.

Box Value: $352.00 USD

September 2019 / / All Access

I was a little disappointed with this box. One because I expected to get the curling iron over the MODA brushes and two, this is the box with the lowest amount of products. We got 8 products instead of the usual 9 or 10. It’s the second lowest box in value, and I don’t know how to feel about an 8 piece brush set that costs $70, which by the way is more expensive than the full Luxie Brush Set I received in my Dec. Luxe box, and that one has MORE brushes.

The products I’m still not sure about are the Tarte Park Ave Princess Palette because their face palettes all look the same, and the IGK Hair Balm because I usually don’t have luck with these kinds of products. Even so I am excited to use the Violet Voss Essentials palette and the Sunday Riley Tidal Cream for the winter.

Box Value: $331.99 USD

Is This Box Worth it?

As I mentioned in the beginning, you cannot get this subscription without their base box. So in the end, you’re spending more than $200 a year if you stay on as a subscriber all year. If we’re talking in terms of the box alone, yes, paying $49.99 every quarter is worth it because the price greatly exceeds the cost. However, when you add it all up along with the base boxes, not so much.

BoxyLuxe is $49.99 for four months = $199.96 USD
Regular Base Box (was) $21.00 for eight months = $168.00 USD

In the end, I spent $367.96 USD **JUST** to get the BoxyLuxe! (OMG!!!!)

It’s a shame Boxycharm doesn’t allow you get the BoxyLuxe without their base box. I get they’re trying to make more money but still. It’s kind of unfair to subscribers and frankly, I think subscribers would be happier if they got to choose which subscription they wanted, just like other quarterly boxes.

I wouldn’t recommend doing a full year like I did, only because it’s a LOT of money. So if you’re able to sneak back into the waitlist each quarter for the Luxe, GO FOR IT! Especially now that their base box will be $25 instead of $21 USD.

Again, the Luxe box is TOTALLY worth it in my opinion and if you’re staying on board with Boxycharm, it’ll be far more exciting now that you guys get to choose 1 – 3 items every quarter! I cannot wait to see what you guys get in your boxes once the changes kick in. I’m going to miss getting a box every month but I think it’s for the best, I have spent so much money on them already.

What do you guys think of this box??
Would you go for it and splurge? Keep the base box or try the Premium??signature

  1. Wow first off I can’t believe the price is going up so much for trying this box and secondly that really sucks you have to subscribed to both! I always wanted to try boxy charm because you get highlighter makeup! And full size!

    1. I know right? Kind of a shame. A few people have unsubscribed due to the price being raised.
And they’re a great box subscription just sucks that they havent made this box available to everyone.

    1. I know. I would love them more and would have probably stayed subbed to them if I had the choice to only get the quarterly box.
I’m off sub boxes for the time being as well. I do plan on trying new boxes next year so I’ll definitely make a list. Lol

  2. These subscription boxes really do get spendy but I just love them so much & you can’t get that many products for a better deal, y’know? I do agree that Boxycharm needs to let everyone get the Luxe. It’s really unfair & honestly, a bit shady how much they plot to make more money off their customers. The worst part to me was how they switched their amount of products & you only got 8 in the last one… isn’t that how many you should get in their new, cheaper Premium box??

Anyways, I love when you do these! It’s always fun to see how much stuff you got in one year, all in a single post like this. I’m looking forward to seeing if their changes really help improve their subscription or make it even worse!

    1. Very true. I almost wish I didn’t have to unsub but oh well. I’ll pick it up again eventually, say….january LOL
Right?? The whole premise of the Luxe is to get like 9 products and they duped us out of one, which I know it may not seem like much, but because they put $70 brushes and other high priced items, they probably thought it was okay to leave one item out so the total value of the box didn’t exceed previous boxes. Of course this I’m just assuming, but if you’re thinking about it from a business perspective, I don’t think it’s that far fetched.
I am definitely very excited to see the same. I hope they don’t fuck it up LOL. I’m excited to see spoilers for the Nov. box. I saw the spoilers for the Oct box and wasn’t as impressed. The only thing I would have wanted was the Dose of Colors palettes, but even then, the only ONE I would have liked to get was the berries one, the others are too neutral for me now that I have a ton of those LOL

      1. Ugh, whyyyy do I want to try the Premium even though it seems like a rip-off LOL. When will they start sending those out? Is there a release date for them?

I gotta see if any Nov. spoilers are out yet & I saw the DOC palettes. So pretty & the formula sounds amazing!!

        1. It does seem like a rip off huh? I wanted to try it too but honestly, it’s like you might as well get the Luxe haha. I think they will start all the new changes next month (November). Be on the lookout for the Boxy Pop Up sale next month as well, they have loads of products for more than 50% off retail price.

          1. Yeah, I agree– you may as well just get the Luxe! I still put myself on the waitlist for the Premium, though, just so I can see if I get the e-mail LOL. Will keep an eye out for the Boxy sale, thank you!! ❤

  3. Oh wow, I didn’t know you couldn’t get the Luxe box without the base box! That adds up to a lot of money. I definitely agree with you…subscribers should just be able to choose whichever box they want and then pay the higher price for the Luxe box if that’s what they choose.
Great idea to break it all down in this post, though! I’m sure that will be totally helpful for people considering it. 🙂
