Gimmick or Innovation? — Becca Zero No Pigment Collection Review

It has been a weird time around here. I tried so hard to be active here on the blog during September, but I found it really difficult. Lots of life changes have been happening and we are trying to get everything sorted. But let’s move onto today’s post.

I almost did an unboxing for this when I received it but decided against it to leave space for other content (ironic because I was barely here). Now after nearly a month and a half; maybe two months, I’m not really sure I’ve lost track of time, I’m here to give my review on both of these products.

Becca Zero No Pigment Collection

The new Becca Zero No Pigment Collection includes two products, the No Pigment Virtual Foundation and No Pigment Glass Highlighter. This collection is all about no pigment, literally! It’s about celebrating your bare skin. When I first opened my box I thought: “Really? No Pigment?” I figured it could be a good thing because I have been going foundation free. However, I couldn’t figure out whether it was innovative or a gimmick. So I tested them out and here are my thoughts on them.

Zero No Pigment Virtual Foundation

Our new makeup and skincare hybrid to smooth and blur the appearance of skin while hydrating all day, with a transparent-matte finish.

This “no pigment” foundation claims to be the new makeup and skincare hybrid to smooth and blur imperfections while controlling oil. The product itself is transparent and odorless. It’s good for normal, dry, combo and oily skin types, and is formulated with hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin. It has clear light blur technology which is made up of water-releasing powders that blur the appearance of imperfections with a matte effect.

I’m prone to breakouts, so the most it does for my skin is blur it. It feels like a primer and I love how my skin feels and looks, but it’s not a necessary product for me. I hardly wear foundation and when I do, I prefer light coverage. I don’t consider this a foundation, but just good skincare. It wasn’t life-changing.

Even though it feels like a primer, the formula is silicone-free and absorbs oil and provides long-lasting hydration. The gel-like texture feels great and refreshing when applied to the skin. It almost* reminded me of their Hydra-Mist powder which I really loved.

Apparently, you cannot use an actual foundation on top of this because they claim it is not* a primer. Confusing I know. To be honest, I did not try to put foundation on top of this, even though I really should have to see how it would wear. Perhaps another time.

Although wasteful in terms of packaging, the spatula is a great tool to have to scoop the product out. Especially if you’re concerned about bacteria, etc.

Zero Face + Lip Glass Highlighter

BECCA Zero No Pigment Glass Highlighter For Face + Lip is a multi-use highlighter for a glass-like glow without the sticky feel.

Skin Type: Normal, Dry, Combination, and Oily

This no pigment glass highlighter is a multi-use product for face and lip and gives a glass-like, wet, dewy look to the skin without feeling sticky. It catches and reflects light so nicely and a little goes a long way; one swipe is enough. The formula is comfortable for wear and is perfect for all skin tones.

The coverage is light and the product is more liquidy. I don’t recommend adding it on top of powders (like blush) because it moves the product underneath. I also think it’s too liquidy for lips, so again, a little goes a long way. It’s nice but I don’t consider it innovative.

If you want to use this on your lips, I suggest you use it on bare lips. It’s runnier than a regular lipgloss from experience. However, you’d still get a nice, super high-shine.

To use on the face, I suggest applying it lightly with fingertips. You can* use the doe foot wand but I’d advice against it so as to not put bacteria and other makeup on the wand. You could also clean it before putting it back into the container but be mindful if you are prone to breakouts. Apply to cheekbones for added dimension. Blend with fingertips.

Influenster and BECCA sent an email with questions and answers from many users who received this box, so I will summarize those very quickly:

Q: When would I wear ZERO Foundation?
A: It’s great for controlling oil smoothing and hydrating skin, and is intended for days you want a break from traditional pigmented foundation, but still want to care for your skin.

Q: Why did you call this a foundation and not a primer?
A: Unlike traditional blurring primers, this water-light formula is silicone free. It’s a unique hybrid formula that provides skin smoothing, all-day oil control benefits of a foundation, and all-day hydration from a moisturizer; something you would not get from your typical primer.

Q: Can I use Zero No Pigment Virtual Foundation as a primer/can you use pigmented products with Zero foundation? I.e. a concealer?
A: This No Pigment Virtual Foundation is not a primer, however the formula leaves your skin surface smooth so you can apply pigmented products on top to any areas where you feel you want pigmented opaque coverage, if you choose to.

Q: Can I use Zero No Pigment Glass Highlight for Face + Lip on top of products with color?
A: Yes! Apply on top of your favorite lip color product to add a glossy finish to your look.

To conclude this post, I thought I’d say that the No Pigment Foundation is a rather gimmicky product. I consider it just really good skincare, and I think it was a bad call to call it a foundation. As for the No Pigment Glass Highlighter, it is not innovative, but it’s not a bad product either.

I honestly don’t recommend wasting your money on this collection, unless of course you want to try these products yourself. It seems people are divided on these products; you either really like them or not, and I seem to fall somewhere in the middle.
